The TP-Link RE500X, also termed as the AX1500 wireless extender, can help you avoid latency and bandwidth related issues effectively. With 25% faster data throughput combined with the latest WiFi standards, you get seamless coverage all around your place. If you have recently upgraded to the TP-Link RE500X or are planning to do so, this blog will walk you through the steps to configure the network settings using the Tether app easily. You will also learn steps to resolve common issues that might arise during the setup process.

Ways you can configure the RE500X network settings

With increased digitalization, and dependency on smartphones, hardly anyone wishes to go through the lengthy and manual setup processes. With this in mind, TP-Link has allowed its users to configure the network settings using three main methods:

  • The TP-Link Tether App,
  • And the manual web-based setup method,
  • WPS connection method.

Plug your TP-Link range extender into a power outlet. Prefer an outlet that’s closer to the main router. Power on the extender and allow the power LED to turn solid.

To configure the network settings using the Tether app, you’ll need to download and install the same on your smartphone.

If you are using an Android device, download and install the Tether App from Google Play Store. If you are on the iOS platform, go to the App store to install the app.

  • Once installed, launch the Tether App and login with your TP-Link ID. If you do not have an account, you can create an account using the Sign up button you see on the screen.
  • Once you are logged in to the app, tap on the ‘+’ button you see on the top right corner. From the Choose your Device Type screen, select the Range Extender option.
  • You can now follow the on-screen instructions to complete the TP-Link RE500X setup.
  • Once the setup process is complete, the signal LED on the extender will turn solid. This will indicate a successful connection to the main router.

Relocating the extender

  • Plug in your extender about halfway between the main router and the location where you intend to use the internet at. This location that you choose must be within 70% signal strength of your main router.
  • Wait for about 2 minutes until the signal LED turns solid blue. If it doesn’t, you can move the extender closer to the main router till the signal quality is good.
  • Once you have relocated and installed the extender, you can connect your devices to the new extender network.

Troubleshooting the Tether App Setup issues

Tether App cannot find your device

If the Tether App is unable to detect the extender network, you can follow these troubleshooting methods:

  • Restart your range extender once and disconnect your mobile from any other bluetooth or wireless devices you have in the location.
  • Open the WiFi settings on your wireless device, and connect to the tp-link extender’s local network. Refer to the correct SSID details from the details mentioned on the product label.
  • Once connected, launch the Tether App and select the extender from the Devices screen. You may now proceed with the setup instructions.

The Signal LED doesn’t turn solid

If you have completed the setup instructions, but the signal LED fails to turn solid, here are some tips you can keep in mind:

  • Check if you have used an incorrect WiFi router network password. Correct the same and try again with the setup process.
  • Ensure the extender is plugged in close to your wireless router. Also, see if there’s any interference from electrical appliances like Microwave, refrigerator, Smart TV or more.
  • If you have the MAC Filter, wireless access control enabled on your wireless router, the tp-link re500x extender will have a hard time connecting. Disable these filters and access controls and try again with the setup process.
  • You can also use an alternative setup method to configure the network settings. The WPS method can be referred to, if you are unsure about the settings.
  • Reset your wireless range extender and go through the configuration process again.
